Faith and reason
Word on Fire · Bishop Robert Barron
Consider how believing and thinking can work together in the search for truth.
SEEK · GROW IN FAITH
Explore important questions with curiosity, careful thinking, and openness to God.
Faith involves trusting God and receiving what he reveals. Reason is our ability to think, ask questions, weigh evidence, and seek understanding. Catholic tradition encourages their cooperation in the search for truth.
Philosophy explores questions about reality, knowledge, goodness, freedom, and human life through reason. Theology studies God and his work in light of revelation, drawing on faith and reason together.
Questions can become opportunities to learn: What makes an action good? What is real happiness? How can we speak about God? Why does suffering challenge us? Start with one question and give yourself time to understand the terms and the reasons offered.
Different teachers and philosophical traditions approach questions in different ways. Begin with an accessible explanation and compare it with the Church’s teaching. Discuss what remains unclear with someone able to guide your study.
Pause and reflect: Which question could help you grow in truth, hope, or love?
The search for truth and an attentive interior life are part of our Augustinian heritage. We seek understanding in a spirit of humility and friendship.
